In July 2006 a 10 year old girl Poonam (name changed) was being sexually abused by a 25 year old man at the platform who kept her forcefully with him. He gave her drugs through food and kept her unconscious to keep her defenceless and continued raping her with his friends. We tried to rescue her by sending her to one of the government run bridge course centre, but after 5 days we received the news that she was missing again. This incidence made us realize the urgency of building a house dedicated completely for the girls were such vulnerable and abused girls could be intercepted earliest possible and brought under a holistic umbrella.
Thus, witnessing the growing need for a similar programme like SPARC dedicated to young and adolescent girls below 18 years of age, the Chirag programme of Jeevodaya started in the year 2007. With the main focus that no girl child may ever find herself defenceless and unprotected Chirag not only provides shelter to these rescued girls but also try to reintegrate them back into their families after thorough counselling of the parents and girl so that a similar hostile situation may never occur again.
